Coverage can vary by carrier and policy, so we help you understand what's included—not simply what it costs.

BUILT FOR LIFE ON THE WATER

Here on the Treasure Coast, boats aren't just something we insure—they're part of how our community lives. From the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon to offshore fishing and cruising Florida's coast, marine insurance should reflect where your vessel goes and what you expect it to protect.

Local knowledge. Independent markets. Guidance that makes sense.

Boat insurance can include coverage for physical damage to the vessel, liability, medical payments, uninsured boater exposure and other marine-related risks, depending on the policy and carrier. Coverage can also vary for equipment, personal property, towing and other features. We compare more than premium so you understand what the policy is actually designed to protect.

Florida generally doesn't require recreational boat owners to carry boat insurance simply to own or operate a vessel. However, a lender may require coverage when a boat is financed, and a marina may have its own insurance requirements. Required or not, the bigger question is what financial exposure you're comfortable keeping yourself—which is why we review the vessel, liability and how you use it before discussing options.

Yes. Where the boat is stored, where you navigate, how it's used and hurricane exposure can all matter to marine underwriting. A boat kept behind a home in Stuart can present a different risk than one stored on a trailer, at a marina or used for longer-range cruising. Tell us how you actually use and store the vessel so we can look for an appropriate fit.

How your boat is valued after a covered total loss can depend on the policy. Some marine policies may use an agreed value, while others may settle losses based on actual cash value or another valuation method. Those differences matter—especially on higher-value or specialty vessels—so we want you to understand how the policy values your boat before comparing price alone.

It can, depending on the coverage, policy terms and carrier. Physical damage coverage is an important part of this conversation; liability-only coverage is not designed to pay for physical damage to your own boat. Marine insurers may also have hurricane-related requirements, deductibles or responsibilities for securing, relocating or protecting a vessel. We review those details with you rather than assuming every marine policy handles storms the same way.

Yes. S & J Insurance Group works with marine insurance options ranging from recreational boats and center consoles to larger vessels and yachts, subject to carrier eligibility and underwriting. Vessel value, size, age, navigation territory, operator experience and other factors can affect the markets available, so larger or more complex vessels usually require a little more information upfront.

Looking for Commercial Marine Insurance?

Recreational boat and yacht insurance is different from coverage for commercial marine operations. If your vessel or business involves commercial use, marine contractors or other commercial exposures, talk with our team about your specific operation.
